End of an era as the Ford Fiesta is discontinued.

In 1976, Ford produced a game-changing car - the Ford Fiesta. And since it first rolled off the production line 47-years ago, over 22-million have found their onto driveways worldwide.

But in June 2023, that impressive sales record will come to an end, with the discontinuation of the Ford Fiesta.

Why is Ford discontinuing the Ford Fiesta?

The reason why the Ford Fiesta is so popular is because it’s:

  • Easy to drive
  • Fuel efficient
  • Affordable

And with saloon, hatchback and convertible models with the option of EcoBoost engines available, it’s a car that’s given buyers the option to drive a vehicle to suit their needs and personality.

So, with its popularity, why the decision to discontinue the Ford Fiesta?

Well, there are several reasons, including the dip in sales since 2020. But the main reason is the switch to electric vehicles (EVs).

Ford has currently invested around £9.5 billion into the production of EVs, and expects them to account for 40% of its global sales by 2030. With the shift to electric, it makes sense to start with a clean design slate. And as Ford is one of the world’s largest car makers, its decision to go all-electric demonstrates the company’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions.

Something backed up in a recent statement by Ford:

By 2023, we’ll introduce three new exciting electric passenger vehicles and four new electric commercial vehicles in Europe. We also plan to sell more than 600,000 electric vehicles by 2026, and the electric passenger vehicle production at the Cologne Electrification Centre reaching 1.2 million vehicles over a six-year timeframe.”

What this means for consumers.

Well, it means if you’re looking to buy one, you need to act before June 2023. And while it’s a disappointing announcement, Ford hasn't ruled out the possibility of releasing an electric successor to the Ford Fiesta.

And why would they?

With its glowing reputation, it would be surprising if Ford didn’t capitalise on that.
