Why Ford's EcoBoost Engines Stand Out from the Crowd

The Birth of a Powerhouse

In 2009, Ford unveiled its first EcoBoost engine, a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6. It promised to be 20% more efficient than its predecessors while delivering impressive power.

The 2010 Ford Taurus SHO was one of the pioneers, sporting a 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine that churned out 365 horsepower to all four wheels. And the kicker? It still managed an estimated 20 miles per gallon.

Cracking the EcoBoost Code

Now, let's talk tech. The term "EcoBoost" isn't tied to a single engine but represents a package of clever innovations.

First up is turbocharging, hence the "Boost" in the name. Turbocharging efficiently extracts power from exhaust gases, giving you more bang for your buck.

Second, there's direct injection. This nifty feature allows fuel to be sprayed into the combustion chamber with pinpoint accuracy, using less fuel along the way.

Last but not least, Ford throws in twin independent variable camshaft timing, which optimizes power when you need it and saves fuel when you don't.

EcoBoost's Grand Finale

All these technological wonders come together in the Ford GT. Under the hood, you'll find a 3.5-Litre EcoBoost engine that, in its standard form, roars with 660 horsepower.

However... the jewel in the crown is the hyper-limited GT Mk IV version, where the number skyrockets to a jaw-dropping 800. To put it in perspective, this 3.5-liter V6 outguns the Lamborghini Aventador's 769-horsepower 6.5-liter V12. Yes, you read that right!

Power in a Tiny Package

Fast forward to 2023, and EcoBoost-equipped Fords might not match the fuel efficiency of most hybrids and EVs on the market. Still, Ford deserves applause for achieving unprecedented power density.

Take the Ford Raptor, for example, which squeezes 450 horsepower from its 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6, and don't even get us started on the Ford  MK3 Focus RS , powered by a 350-horsepower 2.3-litre EcoBoost engine—a fan favourite for a reason.

Over a decade ago, Ford threw out the old rulebook and introduced EcoBoost, proving that sometimes, smaller is better...
